For professional-scale image generation, Midjourney costs $30/month, right? Thing again. Because client work requires the $60 Pro plan for Stealth Mode; otherwise your brand assets sit in Midjourney's public gallery. Add to it the sunk cost of unused Fast GPU hours that don't roll over. By month's end, actual per-image costs with Midjourney could be 30-50% higher than advertised. So, while one can read their pricing page, whether a Midjourney subscription is worth it stays hidden in the details.

Midjourney Free, a Past Relic

Midjourney was completely free on its launch in mid 2022. Until it completely removed its Free tier in mid 2023. 

At the time of its launch it was a revolutionary prompt-to-image generator. One of a kind. Only accessible via their Discord server. But the free Midjourney virality became a liability for overwhelming demand and deepfake images (like the Pope in Balenciaga). So they decided to upend the Free tier entirely and relaunch paid subscription via a website: midjourney.com. 

As of 2026, there is No Free Trial of Midjourney available on their website or Discord server either. However, their pricing doc mentions a limited trial on the Niji Journey mobile app (iOS/Android).

Midjourney Subscription Plans

Unlike most AI Image Generators, Midjourney does not have a freemium pricing model. Instead, a hybrid pricing: 4 tiered monthly subscriptions bundling Fast GPU hours (limited, or priority) with unlimited Relax mode (queue-based, or free). You pay for speed and privacy, not image quality. 

And what I liked about it: All Midjourney tiers include commercial rights to images/videos generated - even after the subscription ends.

Note:
- Annual pricing is 20% cheaper for all plans
- Models are released by versions. The earliest was V6 in Dec 2023. The latest is V8.1 in April 2026. Also, include illustration models by the name of Niji.
- All plans support image-to-video generation as well. Text-to-video not available. 

Midjourney video generator pricing

Video generation in Midjourney uses GPU time from your plan's Fast hours allocation. No separate video pricing tier exists; you simply burn through your monthly Fast GPU budget faster when generating videos. 

Per my estimate, video generation is only practical for Pro/Mega users with sufficient Fast hours.

Factors in Midjourney image/video generation cost

Clearly, with this pricing model, you pay for speed and privacy, not image quality. So I’d think of the cost of image/video generation with Midjourney in both dollar expense and minutes invested. 

Speed Modes (The Core Cost Driver):

• Fast Mode: Priority generation (10-30 seconds per image). Consumes your monthly Fast GPU hours. Once depleted, you either upgrade or switch to Relax.

• Relax Mode: Slower queue (1-10 minutes per image). Unlimited on Standard/Pro/Mega. Free to use, but slower. Ideal for non-urgent work to preserve Fast hours.

Usage Constraints:

• Fast GPU Hours: Your monthly "speed budget." 3.3 hours (Basic) to 60 hours (Mega). Once used, you lose them (no rollover). Average image costs ~3-4 minutes of Fast time.

• Concurrent Jobs: How many generations you can queue simultaneously (3 for Basic/Standard, 12 for Pro). Affects workflow speed for batch work.

Privacy Lockdown:

• Stealth Mode (Pro/Mega only): Take it as mandatory for client work, unless stated otherwise. Forcing $60+ minimum spend.

Overage Risk:

• Running out of Fast Hours: On Basic, you can buy additional hours at $4/hour. Other tiers force an upgrade or Relax mode. Light users often lose unused hours monthly (rollover loss).

Which Midjourney subscription is best?

My take: The Midjourney Standard Plan ($30/month) is the best value for most users since it gives access to Relax Mode (unlimited generations at a slower pace). But Pro ($60/month) should be preferred if you need Stealth Mode for private client work.

That said, other ideal use cases of various Midjourney subscriptions can be:

Use Basic ($10/month) for:

• Learning prompts before committing to serious work

• Casual hobby projects and personal experimentation

• Testing Midjourney fit for your workflow needs

• Occasional side projects under 200 images monthly

Use Standard ($30/month) for:

• Regular creators needing 200+ images per month

• Content creators with moderate, consistent output

• Teams exploring AI imagery without client confidentiality needs

• The sweet spot for most professional solo creators

Use Pro ($60/month) for:

• Client/agency work requiring Stealth Mode privacy

• Companies needing confidential brand asset generation

• High-volume creators exceeding Standard's Fast allocation

• Any business with $1M+ annual revenue (required by Midjourney terms)

Use Mega ($120/month) for:

• Enterprise studios generating 1,000+ images monthly

• High-volume batch production with parallel workflows

• Agencies managing multiple concurrent client projects

• Only if Pro's 30 Fast hours consistently run short

Overcharging Scenarios in Midjourney

The following critique is intentional, not dismissive. As an AI product designer, I’ve seen how GenAI hype can hide its real-world costs. So to avoid paying more than necessary, watch out for these Midjourney overcharging scenarios:

Scenario 1: The rollover loss trap

You're a freelance designer generating 40–80 images per month. The Standard Plan ($30/month) includes 15 Fast GPU hours, which sounds generous. That is, until you realize unused hours don't roll over.

What really happens: 

• Month 1: Use 5 of 15 Fast hours. Roughly two-thirds of your paid GPU time expires unused.

• Month 2: A busy period pushes you past 15 Fast hours, forcing you into Relax Mode or a mid-cycle upgrade.

• Month 3: Demand drops again, leaving another chunk of paid GPU time unused.

Overcharged by:  A $30/month subscription costs $360/year, but recurring unused Fast hours can add $30–45 worth of wasted capacity.

Tip to deal with it: If your workload fluctuates, stay on the Basic Plan or upgrade only when your average usage consistently justifies the higher tier. Only commit to annual billing if you'll hit 80%+ utilization; otherwise the 20% discount won't save you.

Scenario 2: The Stealth Mode lockdown

You're an agency that started on Standard ($30/month) for a client. At some point, they remind that their brand assets should not appear in public galleries. That's when you realize Stealth Mode (image privacy) is locked behind the Pro Plan.

What really happens:

• Month 1–2: Standard Plan works for personal projects. Images are generated and sit in Midjourney's public gallery by default.

• Month 3: Client project lands with confidentiality requirements. Standard has no privacy option. You're forced to upgrade mid-cycle to Pro ($60/month).

• Month 4 onwards: Every client project requires Pro ($60), not Standard ($30). One client gig just doubled your monthly Midjourney cost.

Overcharged by: Over a year with consistent client work, you're paying $720 instead of $360. An additional $360 annual premium for a single feature.

Tip to deal with it: Don't test Standard then upgrade as the transition can cost in overall client retention cycle. Use annual billing ($48/month) if locking into Pro; it saves $144/year versus monthly billing.

Scenario 3: The speed dependency upgrade

You're a content creator generating around 200 images per month. The Standard Plan ($30/month) seems sufficient because Relax Mode offers unlimited generations, and your deadlines are manageable.

What really happens:

• Months 1–2: Relax Mode works fine. You batch content and meet deadlines despite slower generation times.

• Month 3: Client demand increases and turnaround times shrink. Waiting in Relax Mode starts hurting productivity.

• Month 4: You upgrade to Pro ($60/month) for Fast Mode. The same workload finishes much faster, but your subscription cost doubles.

Overcharged by: Your cost per image remains roughly the same, but you're paying an extra $30/month ($360/year) primarily for speed, not additional output.

Tip to deal with it: Before upgrading, calculate whether faster generation actually saves enough billable time. Build a hybrid workflow: using Fast Mode for urgent work and Relax Mode for everything else can often deliver the best value.
